Hey All

Hope u all ok. Time for another update of the advetures here. :)

Ladies Night

Friday the 13th of July was 'Ladies Night' at one of the pubs nearby. Assuming that if you would be a girl you would get cheaper or free drinks or at least some prizes, 3 other guys and myself decided to put on some ladies clothes and went to the pub. It seems to all over the world that when there is a ladies night, there will be a decent amount of women BUT as always there are much more men. The pub was quite full and when they saw us come in everyone stared. It was a good night as we drank and danced and enjoyed ourselves on the whole…even though we didn't get any special offers…not even for the effort! :(

Rinderhorn (3453m)

On the 23rd of July I did my first ever alpine route with Caz. Alpine routes involve walking on a glacier or snowy terrain thus you have to be roped up with your partner and put on crampons and taking an ice axe with you. This is just to help you walk up…if you slip or fall into a crevasse you can use your ice axe to stop yourself and the rope is connected to your partner so you will be able to get help in case anything happens. It was a steep and long way up and Caz was in front of me most of the time kicking in the snow leading up to the top. There where a couple of moments when I wished I wasn't there as it was too tiring but the end and the view were all worth with. However we could not enjoy the view for long (only for 5 minutes just enough time to take some happy snaps) then we had to start walking down just to make it in time for dinner.

Kanderjam

Between the 27th of July and the 8th of August we had Kanderjam, a scout jamboree celebrating the 100 years of scouting. It was a hectic 12 days as we had around 2000 guests, so plenty of work both during the day and night. However there were two Maltese groups (1 of them being mine) so it was fun just walking suddenly you hear someone speak Maltese… :)

On August 1st, the official date when scouting started 100 years ago we all went to Oeschinensee a very picturesque venue where all of us renewed our promise at 9:02 am (together with the World Jamboree in the UK and what I assume the rest of the world) If you followed the news something similar happened at the Granaries in Floriana.

Summer Christmas

On the 18th of August we had another special event…Summer Christmas. Though this might sound strange every summer round about mid August the staff celebrates this holiday. Though it might sound strange it actually is a kind of show of gratitude to everyone for all the work that has been done over the past few weeks. We are all given a name and we have to make or buy a present (with a limited budget) for that person without anybody knowing who your secret Santa is. In the evening then we all have a nice Xmas dinner where eventually Santa comes to visit bearing gifts for everyone.

I will be in Kandersteg til the 19th of September then I am flying to London and staying there til the 27th of September to visit Gillu and some other friends.

The good news is that I passed my interviews and will start working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the first week of October. So I will be in Malta…for a while. Then…we see :)

Love

Adam

Subject: The Legend of 2 Maltesers

So….A couple of weeks ago I had a couple of visits from Malta. First Gregory, our Rover Leader came for 5 days and then Clinton a friend of mine came for 10 days. When they saw the place their inner mountaineer took over and it was like unleashing two hungry lions in the Coliseum! They went crazy and did treks which impressed some of our more hardcore staff over here who have been living in Kandersteg for quite some time.

Unfortunately I couldn't take too many days off with them. I had 2 days off with Greg and none with Clinton (- Sorry Clintex!) Well as typical Maltese we worked hard AND partied harder! My tiny flat was like a club, almost every night having people chatting drinking (our beer) and just plain chilling out. Some times we would put on some Maltese music on. Clinton and myself would go a bit crazier when Xtruppaw were on and we would laugh and sing like maniacs while the others would just stare at us in amazement.

It felt good having 2 other brethrens over here and having the opportunity to share some time with them (even though it was short). It wasn't just us 3 hanging together, most of the time Caz an Irish colleague of mine was with us and she helped me a great deal in showing them a good time over here. She took us climbing and gave the guys advice on where and where not to go…of course the guys always chose the toughest treks! :) I really feel sorry that I couldn't spend more time with them but I had to save my days off for my pit stop in Malta!

Whichever hike they did the guys always did it in less time than it would usually take by common mortals :). I had the opportunity to go climbing at Winterwegg and hike up Galihorn and up to Oeschininsee with Greg. One of my working days I went up on a training hike for the new short termers up to Lötschenpass, which passes through a Glacier. There I met the guys as they had hiked up the day before and spent the night at the Lötschenhutte (a mountain hut) as they intended to do 2 mountain peaks in 2 days. On our way down together I could see what I had missed out on…(we were so noisy!! :D)

I guess it is better to hear what they have been through first hand all I can do is summarise in a few words. Greg did an extremely hard 12 hour trek round a mountain on his own. Apparently there was a close call…(all part of the adventure!) Both Clinton and Greg managed to meet up with the training hike at Lötschenpass. What's so amazing about this is that the people on the training hike left the centre at about 7.30 by van up til the bottom of the mountain, (about an hour and a half walk) while the guys left the centre at 8.30 by walk from the centre. They managed to meet up the others at about 13.00 at the hut. The next day they went up Hockenhorn from the pass and on their return to the hut we all met. When Greg left, Clinton was on his own but this didn't keep him back, he went climbing with Caz and on different solo hikes. I think one of his HIGHlights (and I mean this literally) is when he went paragliding.

Of course after every tiring day we would all meet in the living room enjoy each others company, and I would hear of their adventures over a beer. :) Their holiday here at Kandersteg really 'recharged' me as now I am determined more than ever to climb as many mountains as possible and do as much as possible while I am still here. I have already set a goal for myself (together with Caz and Jean.) I would like to celebrate my birthday in September on a peak of a mountain! :)

If anyone of you would like to visit me please do so. Don't think twice about it…there's plenty to do here! :)

Best Regards

Adam

PS I would like to take the opportunity and thank all the people over here who took time to get to know and enjoy the company of my Maltese friends. (The fact that they're very friendly themselves helped as well!) :)

Hey Guys and Girls,

How's everything back home?! Sorry for taking so long to email and update you but a bunch of stuff has been happening. (so this email might be a bit longish) Here everything is OK…as usual :) Mountains are still here however even though summer has started the weather is very temperamental. It can be sunny in the morning and pouring rain in the afternoon.

A new season means new staff. I enjoyed my last days with the Spring staff but now new people are in. From 8 Short Term Staff we now have 30 Short Termers so at the moment we are 57 Staff from 23 different Countries.

The last 2 highlights of Spring were a Brazilian night and a trip around Switzerland. The Brazilian night was organised by two of the staff who are Brazilian and in it we got a 'taste of Brazil'. Dress code was 'Exotic' so even if the weather outside wasn't exactly exotic a lot of people turned out in bright clothes, shirts, shorts and skirts. We had typical Brazilian food, Salsa lessons, a quiz about Brazil and we even were taught how to make a 'Caprinhia' – an alcoholic drink made of freshly squeezed lemons, lemon peels, sugar, crushed ice, and the alcohol itself which smells like lighting fluid! :)

On another day off I decided to buy a day pass (a ticket costing 56 CHF, which is about LM 15, which lets you take as many trains as you want for the day) and go around Switzerland. I went with 3 of our staff and a guest. In one day we went to Bern, Basel, Lausanne and Montreux. It was quite cool, cause in the morning I went to the supermarket and did things 'a la scout'. With a limited budget I bought some bread, cheese, salami, drink and dessert and during the day whenever I was hungry I would find a park, stop get my handy pocket knife out and start eating :) – no worries.

Well on the 9th of June it was time for a changeover and new staff came. So we were busy for the past few weeks training the new staff. One of the training days is kind of a treasure hunt around the village of Kandersteg where the new staff has to be dressed as stupidly as possible, with their countries' flag painted on their face. It is called 'D-Day' and it also serves as a kind of break from all the sessions they have. This season I happened to be one of the organisers of D-Day so I added a personal touch to it especially the wake up…What usually happens is that we wake up the staff at about 6.30am with loud music. Having watched Pirates of the Caribbean 3 a couple of nights before I was still under its influence so when people came running out of their rooms to see what the music is about they found us, the organisers having a sword fight! :D

Well training went on and in the meantime when I wasn't involved I would go hiking or climbing with other members of staff. Time is once again passing fast and the new Short Termers have graduated and allocated in different departments. Our department – Campsite, has a mixed international lot. On our first day of work we went to Thun, the nearest city, for a stroll and drink. It served as an ice breaking activity. Now that the team is set, we are ready for anything that comes our way this summer! The team is: - Coen (Netherlands) who is the Campsite Manager, myself – The Campsite Assistant, Annie from Canada, Eri from Japan, Hye Young from Korea, Carl from Sweden, Jared from Australia and last but not least Nathaniel from the USA.

On another note, for those who haven't heard yet I will be coming for a pit stop in Malta for a job interview. I will be there from Saturday the 30 th of June up til Wednesday the 4th of July. When I come back summer will be in full swing as the entire campsite will be full of groups from all over!

Well that's all from me with what has to do with my work in Kandersteg. Look out for another email very very soon about what happened when Kandersteg had 3 Maltese guys not just 1!! :)

Regards

Adam

PS
Photos 1 & 2 are of the Brazilian Night. 1 is with the whole group 2 is me with Caz from Ireland. (Coen looking all serious on the side!) :)

Hey All,

How's everything? Well here as usual everything is fine. We just had some freaky weather these past couple of days, and it was quite cold....It actually snowed 2 days ago! Some might say 'Oh Snow.....What fun!' It was horrible! :) There were scouts on the campsites and because of the added weight of the snow the poles of their tents broke. There was a group where there hike tent fell on them while sleeping at 6 in the morning! No one got hurt but even the trees couldn't take the extra weight and a lot of branches broke off and trees seemed to be 'suffering' under the snow. Moreover....my job requires me to stay outdoors so while it was snowing....I HAD TO BE OUTSIDE WORKING. Most of my clothes are summery and I am not really prepared for winter....Nothing I could do....I put on my longjohn's and scarf and had to work....snow or not. Today the weather is back to 'normal' (there is no actual normal in these parts) so it is sunny....all the snow is melting (you could actually see kind of steam rising from the grounds this morning) but the temperature is still quite low.

For the rest I finished training and started my job. I got used to it now and am in direct contact with the guests....PLUS when the Campsite manager is off.....I get to be the boss!! :D It's good fun cause its an outdoor job and I am always doing something. I prefer it than sitting in an office as in beautiful days you get to be outside....however as mentioned the disadvantage is that you have to be outside even when the weather is crap...I also get to drive Chloe1 and Leena4....which are the tractor and the transporter. Got used to driving them now.....very stiff vehicles (no power steering...of course), not very fast and very noisy! :) However I am still trying to get used to reversing with a big trailer attached at the back.

Nothing much is happeneing yet I kind of have a routine now. I am not living at the Chalet anymore now I settled in a house with two other guys 5 minutes away (by bike) from the Chalet. I am not living in the caravan but in a house.....door to door with the pub (what can I say more! :D). The only 'problem' is that the ceiling is quite low and the three of use hit our heads against the beams on average of once a day! :) Its nice not to live in the chalet cause you have some space to yourself (even though it[] 's not nice when you have to bike up in nasty weather....like snow!) .It's also somewhere where you can be quiet and what makes it more interesting is my house mates. Where else can you find a Texan, a South African and a Maltese guy living together?! :)

Finally went climbing.....I don't think I was ever so 'dedicated' to reach a climb!! Usually in Malta I drive 20-30 minutes park my car walk 5 minutes and voila I am at the base of the climb. It's a little different here.... last Saturday I went to climb with an aussie....we hiked for 2 and a half hours......just going uphill but in the end it was worthed (even though we climbed for less time than we hiked to get there and back) it was a nice 60-70 metre multi pitch climb. I had never done anything of the sort and enjoyed it a lot :)

I also experienced something new and cool....a mix of climbing and hiking up a mountain (using spikes which are already in the wall, ladders and bridges)....called Via Ferrata. Wikipedia describes it as (better quote from Wiki explain it so you can understand better)

"A via ferrata (Italian for iron road. In German, a via ferrata is known as a "klettersteig" or "climbing step".) is a mountain route which is equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders, and bridges. The use of these allows otherwise isolated routes to be joined to create longer routes which are accessible to people with a wide range of climbing abilities. Walkers and climbers can follow via ferratas without needing to use their own ropes and belays, and without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing. "

Nothing else to say for now....hope all is Ok back in Malta (and Denmark)....looking forward to receive replies. :D

Regards

Adam

Hey All,

How is everyone in what I assume is sunny Malta?!  Weather is a little worse here imma fil-bqija....everything is going good.  Sorry for not being able to e-mail you earlier but I was busy....I kept myself busy.  Heqq I guess it is understandable that being in beautiful Switzerland one doesn't simply just stay indoors!

Last Thursday the weather was sunny and hot.  Its so different now from when I was here in winter.  (filfatt it was strange to see all the ski slopes I used to ski on are now covered in grass and flowers!) All the scenery around is something amazing....just like looking at  postcard.  I kept remembering of the cartoons Heidi ax propja propja ek kien qisu.  Insomma I relaxed and enjoyed the scenery all day then I had my first 'Barbie' from 16.00 - 23.30 ......:)....Qabel ma tibdew tahsbu hazin......;P a 'Barbie' is just another name for a BBQ.  It was me and 4 other staff members sitting around a fire drinking and eating.  A nice time ax we just spent the afternoon relaxing!  :)

Friday I relaxed a bit more...went on small walking trips and I went EXTREME Nordic walking (which is just a fancy name of walking in a certain way with trekking poles....which supposedly uses 30% more muscles than in normal walking) in the evening with people at the chalet.  On Saturday I decided to be a bit more active and went Mountain biking to the Gasterntal valley (close to the Chalet where I am staying).  It was quite a hard trip mainly cause I hadn't biked in quite some time and it was real MOUNTAIN biking ax we literally biked up a mountain.....insomma m'emmx xi nejdu imma the trip back down was quite cool!! :D  In the evening we went 'clubbing'.....Clubs @ Kandersteg = a hall in a hotel with fancy lights and locals.    Sunday I decided to be proactive again and went hiking with some Dutchie friends of mine....AGAIN hiking UP a mountain....I was wrecked by the end and it was quite tough ax it was quite steep.  Imbad to put the cherry on top of the cake....a game of football at 7pm!

Insomma yesterday and today all my lower body ached!  This week is my training week so basically I go over all the departments to see how stuff works etc etc....  BUT I started as a Campsite Assistant as well.  Heqq with my luck it started drizzling yesterday and hasn't stopped since and half of the time I was on Campsite duty I had to be outside....x'tamel! :)  Up til now its quite interesting I am still learning...(its a process)  Ifem suppost I will get to drive the Chalet's car and Van (on the opposite side of the road here) so that should be interesting, I am going to get lessons on how to drive a tractor which should be quite funny as well....In the beginning I also thought they were going to give me a course on how to use (+ safety and precautions) a chainsaw imma mid-dera memmx bzonn....:( I was looking forward to that....(So mum there's no need to worry I won't be touching any chainsaws anytime soon! ;P)

Insomma that's all i guess for now about my few days here.  I had a chance to write an email today ax I am on duty, which means I have to stay at the centre.  I will send pictures when I get them on the laptop.

Issa I am just waiting to see which flat they give me (ax at the moment I am living in the Chalet and I haven't settled in completely....I have an 8 person room all to myself and my stuff is ALL over the place)  I had requested a place which is near the chalet cause I don't like waking up too early! :)  Issa apparently there is a caravan just behind the Chalet and it is tradition that the Campsite Assistant lives there.  Adom ma qaluli xejn....Imma this place has a bed a cupboard and a chest of drawers I think....oh yes and a small fridge (to keep the beers cool) that's all....so no toilet and shower.....in that case I will have to run (a lot sometimes!) to the Chalet.....BUT it has a good Internet connection!! ;P

Nothing more to say from my side...BTW - Goodluck to those doing or are about to start exams!!

Regards

Adam :)

Campsite Appointment - Kandersteg International Scout Centre.
Adam Kuymizakis - Fgura Scout Group

Thank you most kindly for the great news on Adam's appointment.

This is truly an honour not only to Adam, his scout group (Fgura Scout Group) and his Scout District, but also to the Scout Association of Malta in general.

The Scout Association of Malta sincerely wishes to see Adam gain the most from his experiences at Kandersteg, as was the case in the past with the Scout Association of Malta Training and Development Commissioner, Mr. Leslie Bonnici. Experiences that can later be passed down to other members within our Scout Association.

We are also equally happy to learn that both Adam's Scout Group, the Fgura Scout Group and the San Gwann Scout Group, have teamed up together and shall be visiting Kandersteg later this year.

Thank you once again for your concern.

Hi All,
I hope all is fine in, from what I hear, sunny Malta. Here everything is OK except for the fact that the SNOW IS MELTING!!! :S Well back to that later on....

For a more serious note. I had a day out planned on Sunday the 7th of January however I decided to check my emails and there I got a solemn email from the GSL telling me about Chris's passing. I was very shocked and very sad and I just froze didn't know what to do or say. It was a tough morning as I didn't have anyone here to share my sorrow with as I knew that no one who didn't know Chris would understand.
Chris was an exemplary man, he is what every leader hopes his scouts become when they grow up. Though with the group for a relatively short time he made his presence felt and he was special to everyone who knew him. I guess words cannot express how we felt about him and about the sad news, but we all agree that he is now in a better place watching over us. My deepest condolences go to his family.
Well...over here life goes on, just after some time of grieving (on Sunday morning) I had a phone call and some of the guests who I had spent time with wanted me to do their room check out. I had to put on my smile and continue doing what I signed up to do here. Two words stuck in my mind that day and still do....'Kia Kaha'. These words were said to me in my first days of being here by a friend of mine over here. They are in 'Maori', which is the native language of New Zealand. They basically mean 'Stand Strong' and that's what basically we have to do during tough situations in life.

Well that's it from me for now i will update you with what's been going on VERY VERY soon :)

Subject: Happy New Year

Hey All,
Hope everything is OK back in Malta. Here everything is great. Snow has come again! We were worried here because the weather was sooo nice the snow was melting but last night it started again....OHHH By the Way.....Happy new year!! :D
Well I just thought I would send an email to say hi and send you some pics. I am sending you some pics of one of the hikes we do...The Gemmi Hike 'n Sled. Basically it is a hike full of uphills and downhills where you drag a sled all the way.....When there is an uphill....there's nothing you can do....you have to pull up the sled but remember what goes up must come down....so every uphill you go up in the morning you sled down in the afternoon...MAD WICKED fun.
Plus I am sending you a picture of an igloo some scouts built.....amazing how big it is....I had an igloo building activity and this stuff takes time!!!
Insomma next picture of my new found 'quite nice' sport...Curling.....Boring to watch but quite nice to play.

I will send you some other pics when I get them off the other people...at the moment they are not here they went to the pub.... Well.....I didn't go because.....I am on duty and the duty person is the one who has to stay at the Chalet in case anyone arrives, and also go tour the chalet to check out for trouble. So this means that sometimes you have to miss out on staff night outs and a night out with your fellow pinkies....but someone has to do the job. HEQQ! :)

I don't know if I already told you this but if you click on this link -------> http://www.kisc.ch/?tkw=currentstaff you can see who I am working with, moreover if you browse the website you can find out a bit more about the place.:)

Again, hope all is well
Regards

Adam

PS And as usual I will send more pics as soon as I have time to get them off the people

Subject: Update time

Hey all hope all is ok.
Well here everything is great but I am sooo busy when I finish work at 6 there is always something going on at night so after work i rest a bit shower and leave. Plus everyday i have to wake up early so that adds to the exhaustion. first day was very hard. Some other short termers just gave me a sketchy and brief instruction on how to use skiis and baiscally I went down the slope on my stomach not skiis. I fell so many times!! It gets so fast when you point your skiis directly downwards so since no one taught me how to stop (as usual) I would throw myself on the snow. BY the end of the day i kinda got the hang of it.

Yesterday we had skii guide training provided by the center and since I am the only one who cannot ski i was sent to ski school and within an hour I had the fundamentals nailed....by the end of the day I was skiinbg like a maltese pro skier (which doesnt say much) :) BUT it was good fun and managed to go down the slope alone without falling...for several times :) Well apart from the skiing there is the sledging as well and other winter sports which i am trying slowly slowly.

Well today i am having one of those busy days. I am the only short termer in the chalet as the others are still on ski guide training (they have 3 days total) Meanwhile today and tomorrow I am assigned to the house department which takes care of all the cleaning in the chalet. Next week we start having guests and the chalet is fully booked.

Well....I have to go now....lunch break is over...I hope all is ok with all of you. If i dont manage to email you before have a happy christmas.

Adam

The KISC Website has been updated.... and what an update may I add. Adam made it to the top of the current staff page on the KISC web site http://www.kisc.ch/?tkw=currentstaff. It could be because he had most hits, cause he is the cutest, cause he is the brightest, or maybe the list is in alphabetical order on first name ;). Whatever the case may be, I am glad to see him there with his usual smile. It's been decades since the Scout Association of Malta had a member of the staff at KISC and it makes us all proud to see him there.

Take Care

Subject: Adam just took off

We just gave our farewell to Adam, who just left for Kandersteg, Switzerland to spend 3 months as a volunteer staff at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre. Apart from his parents and myself, there was also our Rover Co-Ordinator, Gregory Attard (who even though his car broke down on him on his way to the airport, he still made it in time.... don't ask me how!).

Adam had all prepared well in advance for the trip......... ok ok you know Adam, he prepared his luggage in the morning, was 13 Kilos over, tried to exchange currency at the airport and the only credit card he took with him is slightly damaged on the magnetic strip. But hey after all its an adventure, so you must add a little risk to make it fun!!

Adam will spend the first 3 days in Zurich at a friend's place and will then leave for Kandersteg with some other staff members with whom he already made contact. Wish him all the luck, fun and hard work!!

GSL

PS: Wherever you see KISC in this blog, it refers to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre.
